A Honeymoon on the Green Mountain Eco Route

An hour from Cape Town, a valley of orchards, mountains and vineyards waits for two people who want adventure by day and slow, candlelit evenings by night.

You’ve done the wedding. Now you want a honeymoon that isn’t a beach chair with a cocktail, a place where you earn your sundowner on two wheels, learn something about the land and the people, and sit down to dinner with an appetite and a good bottle.

Elgin Valley
Elgin Valley

The Green Mountain Eco Route, in the Elgin Valley and Overberg, delivers that. It begins just past Sir Lowry’s Pass, where the N2 carries you into the Elgin Valley from Cape Town, so you can be in the mountains within the hour. All the landowners on the route belong to what is billed as the world’s first biodiversity wine route, part of a regional push for conservation and responsible tourism. You can feel that care in the vineyards, in the guides and on the plate.

Days 1–2: Arrive, Unpack, Exhale

Base yourselves near Houw Hoek. The hamlet is home to Wildekrans Country House, a four-star manor known for gourmet dining and modern art. It makes a lovely first-night address: log fires in cool weather, a garden to wander and a kitchen that sets the tone. Order the local wine, which comes from the farms around you.

The next morning, drive into the heart of the valley. Hiking and mountain bike trails run through fynbos and pine forests, and the roads between them make superb scenic drives. Stop at a farm stall for coffee and something fresh from the oven. Peregrine Farm Stall is famous for its biltong and also has a restaurant and wine cellar.

Days 3–4: Two Wheels, One Valley

This is the adventure chapter. The Elgin Grabouw trail network is a serious reason to come. Its routes include the established Elgin Grabouw trails, newer sections expanded by Stolz Trail Building, and the flowing, manicured trails at Oak Valley. There’s something for confident riders and for partners who prefer a gentler pace, so you can ride together without either of you suffering.

Plan a loop that starts early, while the mist still sits on the dams. One section of a popular mountain-biking route crosses a misty dam on a wooden walkway before heading into the mountain, beginning at the Paul Cluver wine estate. Expect proteas, sunbirds and a view down over the orchards. Oak Valley, described as the historic heart of Elgin’s apple and pear orchards, makes a good place to cool down afterwards.

If one of you would trade the saddle for boots on a rest day, the nearby Green Mountain Trail is an option. It’s a four-day moderate guided walk across private fynbos and fruit farms around the Groenlandberg, part of the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve.

Day 5: Culture, Community and Crafts

Elgin has a human story as well as a scenic one, and a honeymoon gives you time to hear it. Thandi farm stall serves traditional fare and good wine, with hand-crafted local goods to browse afterwards. Buy something made by hand and take it home. In years to come it will be a better souvenir than anything from an airport shop.

Then head north-east for Genadendal, one of the most layered cultural stops in the Overberg. The little mission village outside Greyton has a Moravian church and museum and Khoi pottery, plus a bakery where you should buy a fresh loaf, and a water mill. Wander slowly, ask questions and linger. Nearby Greyton is one of the most beautiful little towns in the Western Cape, with an oak-lined main street where bicycles and horses outnumber trucks. Hire bikes and ride between cafés and restored cottages.

For tours that go deeper into Grabouw and Elgin’s communities, contact Elgin Grabouw Tourism and ask for locally guided options. Local guides will show you far more than a brochure.

The Dinners: Slow, Local, Lit by Candles

The region rewards anyone who takes dinner seriously.

  • A manor-house night. Book a long table at your country-house base and let the kitchen lead, with local produce and a pairing from the nearby farms.
  • A casual farm-stall lunch turned into an evening. The Elgin farm stalls and wine cellars, from Peregrine to Thandi, suit long afternoons that drift into sunset.
  • A picnic by the water. At Houw Hoek you can hire a fishing rod and picnic beside well-stocked trout dams, and if you catch something they’ll cook it for you. A catch-and-cook dinner beside the mountains is one story you’ll tell for decades.

For your last night, ask your guesthouse to arrange a private table. Book it in advance.

Practical Notes

  • When to go: Spring is a particularly lovely time to ride, when the valley blossoms.
  • Getting there: It’s roughly an hour from Cape Town, so you can combine it with the city, the Winelands or the Cape coast. Villiersdorp is about 90 minutes from Cape Town and 30 minutes from Franschhoek, so it slots into a wider itinerary easily.
  • Book ahead: Details such as trail access, guided experiences, restaurant hours and event dates change. Confirm each one directly with the operators before you finalize your plans.

Why This Is the Honeymoon

Some honeymoons are about escaping. This one is about arriving, in a valley where you ride hard, eat well and slow down enough to notice each other, with the mountains as a backdrop to your first chapter together.
